Angleterre Hotel
The four-star sister hotel of the neighbouring five-star Astoria. The elegant Angleterre is a firm favourite in the city, thanks to a stylish and upmarket interior; high calibre rooms, dining and service; and a bevy of facilities that includes a spa and in-house art cinema.
Location
9 / 10
The Angleterre has a prime location overlooking St Isaac’s Cathedral in the historic centre. It’s a 10-minute walk to the State Hermitage Museum and the Cathedral of Spilled Blood. Nevsky Prospect, with its shops and bars, is a five-minute walk, and there are lots more sights, shops, cafés and more in the immediate vicinity.
Style and Character
7 / 10
The hotel’s interior was designed by Olga Polizzi. The opening statement, a graceful marble-floored lobby featuring brown leather armchairs, tasteful nude statues and walls peppered with local artworks for sale, sets an elegant—if slightly bland—tone that’s continued through the rooms and public areas. The reception lends an upmarket atmosphere, with its wine shop on one side and a high-end fashion boutique on the other.
Service and Facilities
8 / 10
It offers all the services of a good quality four-star. There is around-the-clock reception and concierge manned by generally professional but occasionally nonchalant staff who can help with everything from tours, restaurant and theatre-booking to laundry and dry-cleaning services, valet parking; even an on-site doctor. Other facilities include an (expensive) gift shop, plus a spa and fitness area on the fourth floor with saunas (men’s and women’s), a small pool, a turbo-solarium, and a large fitness area. The same building hosts the Angleterre Cinema Lounge, a cultural centre that shows art films, broadcasts ballet and opera performances and presents film premieres.

Rooms
7 / 10
The hotel’s 192 rooms—divided into Executive, Deluxe, split-level Studios and Suites—are connected by green-carpeted corridors with black-and-white photos on the wall, and decorated with smart red and white colour schemes, high-quality wooden furnishings, and small glass-topped work tables. All are fitted with interactive TVs, minibars and safes, and the Italian marble bathrooms come with robes, slippers, power showers and bathtubs. Suites have extra rooms and views vary from a pleasant interior garden to memorable views over St. Isaac’s Square.
Food and Drink
8 / 10
The buffet breakfast offers a decent choice of fruit and cereals, warm dishes like bacon, sausage, and egg options to order, plus yogurts, juices, and a selection of cheeses and cold meats. The casual ground-floor Borsalino Restaurant, with views onto St Isaac’s Cathedral, serves affordable Italian cuisine such as pasta, risotto and pizza but also grilled sea bass and beef alla Milanese; gluten-free and vegetarian options are available too. The restaurant bar does a decent line in wines and cocktails, there’s an English-style tea service in the afternoons, and on the other side of the cinema is the pleasant Shustye, with a modern menu of breakfasts, sandwiches, quinoa dishes, charcuterie and cheeses plus fish, fowl, meat and vegetarian offerings.
