The StandArt Hotel Moscow

Open since 2016, the retro-futuristic StandArt – the first Russian Design Hotels member – is still the chicest hotel in the city by a country mile. As well as offering the most stylish rooms in town, it has a sleek restaurant, an attractive spa and gym, and a conveniently central location.

Location

9 / 10

The hotel is pretty much right on Tverskya Street, right next to the eponymous metro station, looking over Pushkin Square. The state Museum of Modern Art is a five-minute stroll and the Pushkin Theatre and Bulgakov Museum are a 10-minute walk away. The Bolshoi Theatre is a 20-minute walk and you can get to the Kremlin and Red Square in around half an hour on foot, or 10 minutes on the metro.

Style and Character

9 / 10

The hotel’s Art Nouveau exterior was designed by Russian architect Pavel Andreev in 2013 and makes for an eye-catching statement along a busy stretch of road. The interior, a joint effort by Russian designers Varvara Filatova and Pyotr Bragovsky, is as swanky as they come, from the high-tech lobby, with its televisual wall and strategically placed dog-walking cosmonaut, to the dapper suites, which are dotted with contemporary paintings by Stanislav Tratsevsky and feature plenty of swanky furniture and gadgetry.

Service and Facilities

8 / 10

Staff are young, professional and eager to please, while facilities are generally top-notch. The small but lovely StandArt SPA by DECLÉOR, with its natural wood interiors, has a Turkish bath, sauna, four treatment suites, a small plunge pool, and a mirrored gym with Technogym machines; private training and yoga classes are available. The rooftop space seems to be in a constant state of flux, sometimes open, sometimes not, so check while there to see if it’s useable.

Rooms

8 / 10

The rooms are inspired by a vague 1950s sensibility, with designer furnishings, tasteful colour schemes and mod cons such as: ETRO bedding and bath accessories, French cosmetics Lanvin and Smart televisions. Classic rooms, the cheapest category, are generously sized, have splashy colours and come with minibars, work desks, Nespresso machines and dapper bathrooms with showers and tubs; larger Deluxe rooms have more natural tones, beds built into wooden capsules and views over Strastnoy Boulevard and Pushkin Square. The elegant Luxury suites have a spacious sitting room, two separate bathrooms and the Grand Suite has enough space for an additional dining room and can be combined with a Luxury suite. Furnishings throughout are contemporary with plenty of curves and vintage twists.

Food and Drink

8 / 10

The swanky second-floor restaurant, rebranded and restyled in 2019, is now called YURA. It matches dishes such as salmon with cauliflower purée and mussel sauce with panoramic views of Pushkin Square through the large windows. The central bar area knocks out classic cocktails and a mix of old and new world wines, and is bookended by a couple of private rooms that can be set up for conferences, and has views throughout onto Pushkin Square.

Breakfast is a buffet spanning fresh vegetables and fruits, pastries and dairy products from local farms, as well as egg dishes, caviar, and traditional Russian syrniki with cottage cheese.

8 / 10

Double rooms from RUB 10,000 (£282) in low season; and from RUB 35,000 (£332) in high. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi.
