The St. Regis Moscow Nikolskaya
The St. Regis Moscow Nikolskaya, located close to Red Square and the Kremlin, is one of the more recent additions to the city’s luxury scene. Besides the prime central location, highlights include a refined meat-themed restaurant, a spa and indoor pool, plus your own private butler.
Location
9 / 10
The hotel is located on the historic (and heavily pedestrianised) Nikolskaya Street. It’s a five-minute walk to Red Square, the Bolshoi Theatre and St Basil’s Cathedral, as well as the GUM department store. Right across the street is the Lubyanka Building, the infamous headquarters of the KGB. The Lubyanka metro station is right next door, as are lots of swanky cafés, shops and bars.
Style and Character
8 / 10
The hotel is set inside an elegant 19th-century building designed by architect Robert Gedike for Count Alexei Orlov-Davydov. It’s no less ostentatious today, with a dramatic and vast marble-floored foyer and lobby characterised by elegant sofas and armchairs, flamboyant chandeliers and a pair of aesthetically pleasing sweeping staircases, all styled by the LEO International Design Group.
The rest of the hotel is similarly plush, with splashes of Art Nouveau and Art Deco textiles, decoration and paintings (reproductions of Degas, Chagall and Klimt) on show wherever possible. It might feel OTT or too traditional for some, but there’s no denying its luxurious appeal.
Service and Facilities
9 / 10
The uniformed, international staff are efficient and eager in equal measure. Specific services offered include a 24-hour concierge, laundry and shoe-shining, packing and unpacking, garment pressing and the signature St. Regis butler service for all guests — basically a personalised concierge that you can contact via hotel phone or WhatsApp to bring you cappuccinos, make restaurant reservations and other general requests.
There is also a fitness centre and 24-hour pool, plus Thalgo facials and body treatments and massages at the hotel’s Iridium spa. Bentleys can also be rented with a chauffeur.

Rooms

The hotel’s 210 rooms are divided between 166 Superior rooms and 44 suites. All are decadently plush and spacious, decorated in golds, silvers and purples. Upscale furnishings are dotted in each room, from the quality walk-in wardrobes and working desks to the marble bathrooms. Safes, minibars, slick touch-screen controls, gold-framed colourful artworks and large televisions are featured in all rooms, but the suites get an extra living room, coffee machine and a pillow menu.
Bathrooms are spacious and slick, with separate shower (good pressure) and large tubs, Laboratoire Remède products and a mix of marble and mosaics.
Food and Drink
9 / 10
Osteria A Tavola, the restaurant’s upscale restaurant, serves great contemporary Italian, including a veal escalope Milanese, spaghetti dishes and an especially good prime beef dish. It’s also the setting for the lavish breakfast, which includes treats such as sparkling wine and caviar, alongside typical offerings of mueslis and fruits, cold cuts, warm egg dishes, breads and juices.
At the back of the hotel is Ryby Net, a meat-themed restaurant with high-quality steaks, ribs and cocktails; the neighbouring Farsh is very popular for casual burgers. The hotel’s Orlov lobby bar and lounge hosts jazz evenings and serves a light à la carte menu throughout the day as well as teas, coffees and juices.
