Hotel Savoy Moscow

Moscow’s Savoy has a noble history that stretches back to 1913. Comprehensively refurbished back in 2005, it offers an elegant balance of tradition and modernity, with services stretching to a spa, refined restaurant and bar.

Location

9 / 10

The Hotel Savoy Moscow is located in the centre of the city, close to the main attractions and just a block from the Lubyanka, former headquarters of the KGB. The Kremlin (and associated museums) is right around the corner and the Bolshoi and Maly theatres are a five-minute stroll away. Major malls like GUM and TSUM are also nearby, alongside an array of upscale boutiques, cafés and bars. The Ploshchad Revolyutsii and Teatralnaya Metro are also mere steps away.

Style and Character

9 / 10

The hotel is in very good shape given that the last refurbishment was in 2005, overseen by Italian architect Leonardo Tonioni, who injected the interior with some seriously suave Italian luxury. From the opulent lobby to the painted ceilings featuring cherubs and chandeliers, oil paintings on wood-panelled walls and slew of statues and marble, the entire establishment oozes refinement. The lobby bar has a more contemporary feel, while the rooms favour a classic five-star feel.

Service and Facilities

9 / 10

The hotel’s Savoy Marine Club has a large (25-metre) and attractive indoor pool tricked out with geysers and cascades, as well as a sizeable gym with treadmills, rowing machines and free weights, plus a sauna, and a beauty salon offering hair care and manicures. There is a dedicated concierge for concert bookings and travel services.

Rooms

Restaurant Savoy, as famous for its stunning rococo mirrored ceiling and marble fountain as its high-end menu of Russian and European cuisine – the sterlet with champagne sauce and red caviar and Moscow style sturgeon baked with potatoes are justifiably famous – is a fabulous place to dine; previous guests include Pavarotti and Richard Gere. The breakfast is suitably lavish, with a full range of hot and cold dishes, pancakes and eggs, and a great deal of beverage choice, including champagne, all set to live piano music.

The dapper two-level Hermitage Bar, which has a few comfy seats, some bar stools and a fireplace in the neighbouring lobby, serves excellent drinks from hot chocolate to cocktails, as well as excellent wines, homemade cakes and light snacks. It’s popular as a stop-off before or after an evening at the Bolshoi.
